Manifestations of morphology-dependent resonances in Mie scattering matrices

چکیده
Lorenz±Mie computations of the extinction cross-section for monodisperse spheres show the existence of a very complex structure that includes extremely narrow peaks called morphology-dependent resonances (MDRs). The width and magnitude of the peaks are highly sensitive functions of the size parameter and the refractive index of the sphere. So far the MDRs have been calculated and observed mostly for the total optical cross-sections and the scattered intensity, though it has been clear that they should also exist in the scattering matrix elements. In this paper we use modern visualization techniques to study the manifestations of MDRs in the elements of the Stokes scattering matrix and their dependence on the refractive index. We show that within MDRs, the scattering matrix elements may drastically change not only their magnitude, but also their sign. Even weak absorption inside the particles strongly modi®es and then completely destroys the polarization resonance eects. Ó 2000 Published by Elsevier Science Inc. All rights reserved.

Geometrically enhanced morphology-dependent resonances of a dielectric sphere.
The effect that geometrical resonances of orbiting internally reflecting rays have on the morphology-dependent resonances of microspheres is investigated heuristically and numerically using generalized Lorenz-Mie theory. Angularly resolved off-axis Gaussian beam elastic scattering spectra are presented. The results obtained show that the elastic scattering intensity of morphology-dependent reso...
متن کاملEffects of nonsphericity on the behavior of Lorenz–Mie resonances in scattering characteristics of liquid-cloud droplets
By using the results of highly accurate T-matrix computations for randomly oriented oblate and prolate spheroids and Chebyshev particles with varying degrees of asphericity, we analyze the effects of a deviation of water-droplet shapes from that of a perfect sphere on the behavior of Lorenz–Mie morphology-dependent resonances of various widths. We demonstrate that the positions and profiles of ...
متن کاملEnhanced coupling to microsphere resonances with optical fibers
Morphology-dependent resonances (MDR’s) of polystyrene microspheres were excited by an optical fiber coupler. For optical elimination of the air–cladding interface at the optical fiber coupler surface, the microsphere was immersed in an index-matching oil. MDR’s were observed, even though the relative refractive index between the microsphere and the oil was only 1.09. The observed MDR spectra a...
متن کاملResonances in Mie scattering by an inhomogeneous atomic cloud
Despite the quantum nature of the process, collective scattering by dense cold samples of two-level atoms can be interpreted classically describing the sample as a macroscopic object with a complex refractive index. We demonstrate that resonances in Mie theory can be easily observable in the cooperative scattering by tuning the frequency of the incident laser field or the atomic number. The sol...
متن کاملImproved Gaussian beam-scattering algorithm.
The localized model of the beam-shape coefficients for Gaussian beam-scattering theory by a spherical particle provides a great simplification in the numerical implementation of the theory. We derive an alternative form for the localized coefficients that is more convenient for computer computations and that provides physical insight into the details of the scattering process. We construct a FO...
